Coolum is a beachside suburb located on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia.
The suburb lies 74 miles of Brisbane in the local government of the Sunshine Coast Region under the estate electorates of Ninderry and Maroochydore.
Suburbs surrounding Coolum includes the Peregian Springs, Yandina Creek, Marcoola, Peregian Beach, Yaroomba, and Pacific Ocean.
In 2011, the suburb has over 7, 905 residents.
History of Coolum
Coolum came from the aboriginal term guloom meaning headless or blunt. People believe it refers to the Mount Coolum for having no mountain crest.
Based on hearsays, the Coolum’s head was knocked off by the Ninderry and it fell into the ocean that forms the Mudjimba Island.
Inabarre and Yinneburra tribes were the first settlers in the region until the arrival of the European settlers in 1823.
The first European settlers known were shipwrecks sailor and castaways.
Mark Blasdall acquired 252 acres of land in the Coolum, where he decided to make a sugarcane plantation and sawmill to cut timber.
Later on, steamships were allowed to enter to get and transport supplies.
In 1905, William Perry-Keene and his family were the first permanent settlers of the suburb. He called his home, the Green Hills.
