History of Maleny
Maleny is a parish term derived from a place called Maleny in Midlothian, Scotland.
The Dallambara and Nalbo tribes were the town’s first settlers. It was followed by the arrival of a European settler named Ludwig Leichhardt in 1844.
Just after the Gympie gold rush in 1867, European settlers started to dominate the region.
There was an abundance of Bunya tree in Maleny, which paves way for the Bunya feast that happened every three years.
In 1891, Maleny was officially proclaimed as one of the towns in Sunshine Coast.
A Butter Factory was opened in 1904. Later on, timber, food growing, and dairy production became prominent in the area.
In 1889, Maleny Post Office opened.
