History of Maroochydore
Andrew Petrie gave name to the land, where he first settled in 1842. He named the area Maroochydore, which was derived from the term murukutchi-dha, a Brisbane River Aboriginal term, meaning the place of the red bills.
Pettigrew settled and built his home in Maroochydore in 1884. In 1891, he opened sawmill in the region. At the same time, the first postal office in Maroochydore was established.
In 1898, Pettigrew closed the mill, which was acquired by the James Campbell and Sons.
In 1903, Thomas O’ Connor bought Pettigrew’s land and subdivided it into portions. He made his first land sale in 1908.
After the sale, a seaside resort was born.
On October 1922, Maroochydore Post office opened and served as a receiving office.
