Henry Smith arrived on Montville in 1887 and bought a portion of land in the region in 1893. Later, he named the land Montville as suggested by his mom, who was born in Montville, USA.
In 1900, the town of Montville was known as a mountain resort. It also got national attention after it became the setting of the 1959 novel Lantana Lane by Eleanor Dark.
Farming and logging were abundant in Montville. Citrus, pineapples, dairy, avocados, and macadamia nuts were dominant during those days.
In mid 1970, tourism boomed and many tourist spots and scenic views were developed.
On February 1910, Montville Post Office had its first day of operation. It served as a receiving office since 1897.
Founded in 1896, the Montville State School has over 160 pupils in the present.
