History of Nambour
Tom Petrie with 25 Kabi Kabi and Turrbal men settled in Petrie’s Creek in 1862 with the aim to exploit the abundance of cedar in the community.
After they met some resident aboriginals, the group camped in an area now known as the Nambour.
His twenty five aboriginals worked hard to build roads for the transport of logs and timbers.
Nambour was established in 1870 and was initially named as Petrie’s Creek. Not long after 1891, when the Maroochy Divisional Board renamed the Petrie’s Creek into Nambour.
Nambour came from the aboriginal term naamba, which means Callistemon Viminalis, a red-flowering bottle brush.
On June 1888, Petrie’s Creek Post Office opened but was renamed Nambour by 1890.
Nambour has over 10, 000 populations on 2011.
