Palmwoods was formerly known as the Merriman Flats named by the Kuskopfs in 1881. From Merrim Flats, it was renamed to Palmwoods due to the abundance of Piccabeen Palm in the region.
Palmwoods Post Office opened in 1902 following the operation of the Palmwoods railway station.
