History of Sunshine Coast
James Cook came to Caloundra in 1770. He discovered the Glass House Mountains from the deck of his ship, HM Bark Endeavour.
In 1820, three castaways namely Finnegan, Pamphlet, and Parsons stayed in Sunshine Coast for eight months witnessing the lifestyle of the Kabi Kabi Aborigines. Hence, the region was known as home of convicts from 1830 to 1840.
In 1842, Governor George Gipps acquired the hinterland and Sunshine Coast, where he established the Bunya Bunya Reserve. The reserve aims to protect the bunya trees within the vicinity.
However, the Reserve became the center of Australia’s Black War between 1840- 1850.
The Blackall Range served as a rallying point and a hideout against the white settlement.
Later on, the Bunya Bunya Reserve was exploited and scrapped.
