Woombye is a suburb located in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, Queensland, Australia. The locality sits 61 miles of Brisbane’s central business district in the local government area of Sunshine Coast.
It is surrounded by the towns of Nambour, Coes Creek, West Woombye, Hunchy, Rosemount, Palmwoods, Diddillibah, Kiels Mountain, and Chevallum.
Woombye has recorded 2094 residents on 2011.
History of Woombye
The term Woombye was derived from the Aboriginal word Wambai meaning black axe or Wumbai meaning a place of black snake.
It was originally named as the Cobb’s Camp but since most of the town’s places were named after Cobbs, the government decided to rename it to Woombye.
On October 1868, a road connecting Brisbane and Gympie was established by the Government. And later on, the Cobb & Co coaches started operation on October 1868. It carried mail, passengers, golds, and goods back and forth the suburbs.
Kurl Stumpf was able to sell liquor in 1877.
In 1878, Frederick Schubert purchased 160 acres of land in Woombye, where he built a hotel, butcher’s shop, and a store.
The town’s first Court House was established near the police station.
